Show and Tell : Pride and Prejudice and Zombies : Dawn of the Dreadfuls

Show and Tell is wasted on elementary schoolers. Join several dozen bloggers weekly to show off an item, tell a story, and get the attention of the class. In other words, this is Show and Tell 2.0. Then, go see what others are showing !

Today for Show and Tell : a book !!

I was on Facebook when I saw this offer of a copy of Pride and Prejudice : Dawn ofthe Dreadfuls if we were to blog about it. I immediately asked for one.

I had bought Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the first one. I had read none of them because I was too busy and always had time to read other stuff. Chick lit, detective novels, magazines…

I saw a chance to get to it. I just hope they were not looking for professional critiques because I am not that. I have been paid to read a few years back and I have read for literary awards. I hated it. I love reading for fun. I don’t want to have to read a book, I want to want to read it.

I already love Jane Austen’s novels. But what if I didn’t like them with zombies ? What if it was a terrible story ?

Well. In preparation for this reading I started to read the one with sea monsters and I shut it almost as fast as I opened it. Didn’t like it. It was boring.

I wanted to read the first one of PPZ but I feared I would lack time so I embarked on PPZ : DOD. You know how I just wrote that I hope they didn’t want a professional critique ? It’s because I just like it ! Nothing fancy about me liking this book. A lot. Within the first few chapters I had already frightened my seat neighbor in the metro. I was probably laughing like a hyena. For the next few days I scared people in the Java U, the metro, the gym, at work. I snorted, I laughed, I cursed, I even had to swipe tears. I was tired after work, my eyes were dry, it was then quite easy to make my eyes tear up because it was busy in the metro and I didn’t want to laugh too hard so it was even funnier. So I teared up.

What was funny ? Almost everything. I have read Pride and Prejudice and I have watched the series (the one with Colin Firth, duh, and don’t even mention the films, ark) so the story with zombies was surreal, insane and kick ass. I kept hearing the mother with her shrill voice, the snickering younger sisters. I kept picturing Elizabeth and Jane Bennett as they were in the series, doing their push ups, trying to choose between this or that weapon and just basically kicking some zombie putrified and stinking ass. It was funny. Being warriors with their mamma trying to find them husbands and planning their coming out.

Maybe you think I’m easy to please. Maybe I am but I don’t think so. For the past few years I have had a lot of trouble finding books I want to read from cover to cover. Even the ones I like are abandoned before the end. I was indeed surprised to have no trouble at all diving into the book and picking it up every time I had a subway to ride or minutes to wait at the gym before the class. It was easy to read and so much fun.

So that’s about it. I really liked the book and I will definitely read the…sequel which is the first book. Thank you to Quirk books for that copy !

PPZ has a Wikipedia page and will become a movie in 2011. If they make a movie of Dawn of the Dreadfuls, I hope that the Master is played by Jude Law. Hmhm.
